Although there are many eGrocers in the US that deliver nationwide, this map represents eGrocers that offer local delivery and/or pick-up with a wide range of products. New Seasons Market: Founded in 1999, this environmentally and socially conscious company has very quickly made a name for itself. It boasts 9 stores in Portland and picks online grocery orders from a sub-set of those stores. Their website went live in the Fall of 2006 and offers delivery and pick-up. Their website (both corporate and consumer) is well maintained and carries advice, products and video clips.

Albertsons: Before being bought by a CVS/Super Valu/Cerberus consortium in January 2006, Albertsons were the second largest grocer in the US. They are still the largest eGrocer, in terms of areas covered. Over 1,000 zip codes are covered in 9 states – mainly out of Albertsons stores, but Acme Markets is also used in Philadelphia.
Albertsons originally picked their orders using a centralized warehouse and then changed to the wareroom option. A decision was then taken to use the in-store picking in 2002 and Albertsons have rolled out the in-store model with some success. The in-store picking model allows greater flexibility, faster roll-out and less upfront costs.

Safeway: The US’s third largest grocer have made a success out of their eGrocery ventures. A combination of minimum order values, in-store picking and carefully selected markets have made sure that Safeway customers are as happy as the Safeway Financial Director. A company called Grocery Works controls the online operation of Safeway. Grocery Works is 54% owned by Safeway and 35% owned by Tesco who have brought their expertise in in-store picking over from Europe. Safeway service almost 1,000 zip codes in 7 states (plus Washington D.C.) through Safeway, The Vons and Genuardi’s.

Spud.com: California, Seattle, and Portland benefit from this locally-stocked organic egrocery. Beginning as a small Canadian operation in March of 1998, Spud! are now the largest organic food delivery company in North America. They offer free pick-up and delivery (with a low minimum purchase).

Roth’s: Founded in 1962, Roth’s have a dozen stores in the greater Salem area. They offer home delivery of groceries ordered online.
