Safeway: The US’s third largest grocer have made a success out of their eGrocery ventures. A combination of minimum order values, in-store picking and carefully selected markets have made sure that Safeway customers are as happy as the Safeway Financial Director. A company called Grocery Works controls the online operation of Safeway. Grocery Works is 54% owned by Safeway and 35% owned by Tesco who have brought their expertise in in-store picking over from Europe. Safeway service almost 1,000 zip codes in 7 states (plus Washington D.C.) through Safeway, The Vons and Genuardi’s.

Harris Teeter: Over 140 stores in 5 South-Eastern states. Pick-up is provided from a limited selection of stores with home delivery from an even more limited selection.

Peapod (Giant): Peapod are the last of the dot.com companies still standing. Bought by Royal Ahold in 2001 when Peapod were in a financially precarious position, the company has gone from strength to strength ever since. Although the Chicago and SE Wisconsin market is serviced from a centralized warehouse, Peapod’s operations on the East coast have ‘piggy-backed’ on the locations of it’s parent company (Royal Ahold). Both Stop & Shop and Giant supermarkets are used to fulfill orders all along the Eastern seaboard. Service charges vary according to the amount purchased and the use of the wareroom model has hampered customer-friendly initiatives such as placing an order up to 4 hours before a delivery slot. In total, Peapod service over 750 zip codes throughout the United States.
