The key to a successful delivery operation from a financial perspective is maximizing vehicle utilization.
A key activity should be to attempt to smooth the delivery demand through the week and promote less popular time slots. This activity will improve trucking efficiency levels and by default improve profitability levels. Considerations could include a reduced delivery charge (i.e. tiered service charge) and small business/restaurants deliveries at low peak times as they are more flexible on when deliveries can be accepted.
A workplace shopping service could also assist in better utilization of the vehicles, where a delivery is made once per week to a company's parking lot at a pre-defined time (typically close of business on a quiet day) for a reduced delivery fee.
Clever marketing of the service and management of the delivery slots will promote less popular time slots and help achieve greater truck utilization.
